LOS ANGELES -- Ronald Reagan, the longest-living U.S. president, celebrated his 91st birthday at home with his family and was honored with a proclamation by the governor declaring it "Ronald Reagan Day" across California.

Reagan spent his birthday with his wife, Nancy, and daughter Patti Davis, at his Bel-Air home. He had his favorite cake -- chocolate.

Reagan, who has recovered from a broken hip suffered in a fall last year, has remained secluded at the home since announcing in 1994 he has Alzheimer's disease.

"He's doing as well as can be expected," said Joanne Drake, Reagan's chief of staff.

California Gov. Gray Davis honored Reagan on Wednesday by proclaiming it his day.

Son Michael Reagan told CNN his father sleeps later each day and is not really able to get up and walk around.

"Every day gets a little shorter for him and every day the world gets a little smaller for him," Michael Reagan said.

Asked how Nancy Reagan is faring, he said: "They have so many memories but they're not able to really discuss the memories ... It's really a one-way conversation."
