The record for rainfall through Aug. 8 was set in 2009, when 3.74 inches had already fallen. Last year, only 0.04 inches was recorded from Aug. 1 through 8.

Much of Thursday's rain fell in about one hour, the National Weather Service said Thursday.

The duration and volume of rain this week caused the Cape Girardeau wastewater treatment plant to release untreated and partially treated sewage into the Mississippi River for several hours because the system was taxed beyond its capacity.
