Quartet Seraphin will present a Free Family Concert at Old St. Vincent's Religious and Cultural Center at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 11.
The concert is sponsored by JCPenney and the Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts, with financial assistance provided by the Missouri Arts Council.
Quartet Seraphin was formed in St. Louis in 1983 by the four women who still comprise the group : Wanda Baker and Rose Martin on violins, Sara Pendolfi on viola and Mary Lou Gotman on cello.
The quartet's activities over the past 11 years include full-length quartet concerts, some with guest artists, including repertoire of the masters as well as the new work written for the quartet.
The quartet has toured in Missouri and Illinois, presenting public concerts as well as school performances. Through its connection with Young Audiences of St. Louis, Quartet Seraphin has presented several programs over the years including "Amadeus and Friends", "Picasso and the Modern Movement" and its current program of "Bach to the Future."
The the first week in March, Quartet Seraphin presented seven performances of a theater piece called "Haydn Seek" with actor Chris Limber playing the part of Josef Haydn in a script written by Sue Greenberg.
In this piece Haydn, as a ghost, visits the quartet at a rehearsal and, between musical excerpts of his own works, talks about his life and work and comments on what he discovers in the world of the 1990s.
The 45-minute production, designed for school audiences, was just as successful with adult audiences who appreciated its humor and content as well.
The quartet is planning to schedule repeat performances in the 1994-95 season.
