~During the formative years of Fists of Phoenix, Jarred Harris was the band's bassist, commonly recognized as one of the best bassists in Cape.

Now Harris has taken a new path, away from his rock 'n' roll roots and into jazz and classical as he studies at Southeast Missouri State University. The amazing bassist and all-around-nice-guy answered these questions via e-mail for OFF music editor James Samons.

OFF: What were the circumstances surrounding your split from Fists of Phoenix?

Harris: The reason I split the band was because I was, and still am, trying to look at the picture in a long run. I mean, playing in the band was one of the best experiences in my life, but you can only play for free for so long before you need to make money to keep going, plus, in order to become a better musician, one must be knowledgeable in theory -- as in chords and progressions, etc. A musician has to know the language and that's the goal.

OFF: What are you involved with now? Any new bands or projects?

Harris: Right now I am currently in the Studio Jazz Band and the faculty jazz band Sultans of Swing. I also participate in the Southeast Missouri State University Orchestra.

OFF: Are you still a fan of the band, and if so, do you attend performances?

Harris: I still try to make The Fists shows when I can, and I will always supports them and help when I'm needed.

OFF: What do you think of the band's new material?

Harris: As for their new material, it's hit and miss for me. My last favorite song by them was "Shattered like Seashells."

OFF: What's next for Jarred Harris?

Harris: I am currently exploring the classical realm of music a little more than jazz, but I really enjoy playing both genres. I also am trying to get into a bassist's studio in the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra to further my playing and assist me into a graduate school.
