Jay Purcell had nearly twice as much money in the bank as either of his primary opponents going into the last five-plus weeks of the Republican campaign for the 158th District state representative seat, which includes most of Cape Girardeau.
However, one of those opponents, Jason Crowell, had spent 10 times more than Purcell so far in the campaign.
The third candidate in the primary, Stan Wicks, lagged far behind the others in both spending and available campaign revenue.
The campaign finance disclosures are from reports filed this month with the Missouri Ethics Commission. The reports cover the April, May and June.
The primary election is Aug. 8. The winner will face Democrat Tom Neumeyer in November, who is unopposed in the primary. Incumbent Rep. Mary Kasten, a Republican, is not seeking re-election.
Purcell started the reporting period with $955.99 in the bank. He raised $11,848.25 -- including a $10,000 personal loan to his campaign -- and spent $2,974.11, leaving him with $9,830.13.
Crowell had $1,271.20 on hand as of March 31. In the last three-month reporting cycle, he took in $5,455 and spent $1,710.23 for a remainder of $5,005.97.
Wicks, making his first required finance disclosure, took in $2,500, all out of his own pocket, and spent $2,446.22 to leave him with $53.78 in the bank.
Crowell by far has raised the most money as well as spent the most so far during the campaign.
Crowell had raised a total of $37,021.33 and spent $30,760.23. Crowell, who had spent $29,050 before April 1, did the bulk of his campaign spending early, pre-buying television and print ads and making other expenditures.
Crowell had taken in nearly three times more than Purcell and spent more than 10 times as much. Purcell had raised $12,958.26 while spending $3,128.13.
Wicks had taken in $2,500 and spent $3,329.05, for $882.83 in debt. The Crowell and Purcell campaigns each report $10,000 in outstanding debt.
Purcell's expenditures this period were primarily for yard signs and miscellaneous supplies
He received money from seven contributors, with related Cape Girardeau businesses Nip Kelley Trucking Co. Inc., Kelley Transportation Co. Inc. and Nip Kelley Equipment Co. Inc. each giving the maximum of $275. His other four contributors: Vernon Rhodes, Carol Rhodes, Francis Rhodes and Edvira Rhodes, all of Cape Girardeau. Each donated $250.
The bulk of Crowell' expenses -- $1,135.37 -- during this period went for salary and expense reimbursement for a campaign staffer. Most of the rest went for Web site costs.
His campaign reported 62 donors, 50 of whom gave $100 or less. Those giving the maximum included three local individuals, Rock Finch, Bob Fox and Jeff Maurer; the Craftsman International Union of Cape Girardeau; and Republican state Sen. Peter Kinder's campaign committee.
Donating $250 were Bill Ogborn, J. Russell Felker, Joel Ray and Patricia Ray.
Crowell received at least 18 donations totaling $785 from contributors outside of the 158th District. All of those contributions were for $100 or less.
Wicks spent $,1859.15 on printing and yard signs and $1,382 on television advertising. He reported no individual contributions.
Democrat Neumeyer, who is unopposed in his party's primary, filed his first required disclosure report of the campaign for April 1 through June 30 period.
Both during that period and in the campaign as a whole, Neumeyer had raised $2,725 in cash donations and spent $208.96, leaving him with $2,516.04 cash on hand.
Democratic committees and candidates gave Neumeyer $925. Those donations include the maximum of $275 each from the Cape Girardeau County Democratic Central Committee, the campaign of Missouri House Floor Leader Jim Kreider, D-Nixa, the Byrd Township Democrats; and $100 from the Cape Girardeau County Democratic Women.
Other maximum contributions came from the Carpenters District Council of Greater St. Louis and Donald Neumeyer of Middleton, Wis. Neumeyer also gave $250 to his own campaign.
At least seven of Neumeyer's 15 individual cash contributions totaling $1,555 came from outside of the 158th District. All of Neumeyer's cash contributions were for $100 or more.
Neumeyer's expenditures were for general supplies and campaign materials.
