Public invited to view transfer station

The Doe Run Co. is inviting the public to view the recently completed bulk transfer facility at the SEMO Port Authority, designed to hold lead concentrate shipped from Doe Run mines in the Missouri lead belt. The 20,000-square-foot facility, capable of holding 12,500 tons of lead concentrate at a time, will be open for public viewing at 10 a.m. Saturday at the SEMO Port on Route AB in Scott City.

The building represents the largest continuous concrete pour in Southeast Missouri history, requiring 2,600 cubic yards of concrete, which is 3 1/2 feet thick. Doe Run will be able to load 400 tons of lead per hour onto barges. The facility is intended to prevent lead dust from entering the environment, make handling the lead more efficient and be visually appealing.

Representatives from Girardeau Stevedores, building owner and constructor, the port authority and Doe Run will be on hand to discuss the new facility. The open house will be the only opportunity for the public to view the inside of the facility.
