Public hearing set for today on building code updates

The Board of Appeals and Development Services Department of the city of Cape Girardeau will hold a public hearing at 3:30 p.m. today at city council chambers, 401 Independence St., to get input from residents on updating building codes.

Items to be reviewed include:

• 2015 building code,
• 2015 international residential code,
• 2015 international plumbing code,
• 2015 international mechanical code,
• 2015 international fuel gas code,
• 2009 international energy conservation code,
• 2015 international property maintenance code,
• 2015 international existing building code,
• 2015 international swimming pool and spa code and
• 2014 national electric code.

People also may submit their suggestions in writing to the Division of Inspection Services.

The Board of Appeals has been discussing and considering these updates in a series of meetings that began last year. After the public hearing, the matter of updating codes will go before the city council for approval before the new rules can take effect.
