WHEELING, Ill. -- A 39-year-old Wheeling woman stopped for whiskey, beer and cigarettes just after hitting and killing a 72-year-old pedestrian with her car, prosecutors claim.

Sheila Holub is charged with reckless homicide in the hit-and-run death of Donald Santowski Wednesday, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Scott Biestek said.

Biestek said Holub drove her Oldsmobile Achieva into Santowski while he was on what family members called a weekly ritual of picking up sandwiches and lottery tickets. Santowski went over the hood and shattered the windshield.

Holub then continued driving to B&L's Liquor, bought a pack of cigarettes, a bottle of whiskey and a six-pack of beer, and drove home while pulling out the broken windshield, authorities said.

Biestek said Holub then described the incident to a neighbor, who called police.
