NEW MADRID, Mo. -- The man accused of killing a store clerk during a robbery will face the death penalty.

New Madrid Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Lawson filed notice with the Circuit Court on Wednesday he will seek the death penalty for Deion D. Martin of Parma, Missouri.

Martin is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action for the May 18 robbery at D and L One Stop in Parma.

During the robbery, Martin is accused of fatally shooting Brenda Smith in the head.

Lawson said in the court document he intends to offer evidence Martin caused Smith's death "after deliberation upon the matter."

Susan Warren, Martin's public defender, declined to comment.
