FIRE TAX PROJECTS
Over the next 10 years, the city would:
Construct a new fire station on North Sprigg Street north of Blanchard Elementary School to replace the aging Emerald Street Station that was built in 1951.
Replace two aging pumper fire trucks and refurbish another.
Refurbish the city's large ladder truck and add a new ladder truck.
Replace the roofs on the Kurre Lane and Mount Auburn fire stations.
Purchase a new multipurpose fire truck and a rescue boat.
Renovate the city's Sprigg Street fire station.
Replace and standardize self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighters.
Renovate police station including replacement of its heating and air-conditioning system, which often breaks down and needs repairs. Also remodel an old house behind the station for added office and storage space.
Replace up to 10 police cars a year. Each of the city's current police cars has traveled at least 70,000 miles, and most have even higher mileage.
Boost salaries for police officers.*
Hire three additional firefighters to meet national staffing standards.*
Upgrade and relocate communications center to new fire station. Dispatchers would become part of the fire department. Currently they are part of the police department.*
Purchase new protective equipment. That includes buying stun guns that allow officers to disable combative suspects with an electrical charge.*
* The items denoted with an asterisk will be budgeted as operating expenses. The rest of the items are capital improvement projects.
