The Cape Girardeau Historic Preservation Commission and the public library will sponsor two workshops beginning at 7 p.m. on May 16 as part of Historic Preservation Week, May 12-16.
Peter Wollenberg, an architectural conservator from St. Louis, will present "Problems with Older Masonry." The discussion will cover the differences between historic and modern masonry, repointing material and techniques, problems caused by moisture and the selection and removal of various masonry coatings.
Wollenberg has a master's degree in historic preservation from Columbia University and has worked for architectural firms in Vermont, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. He currently owns an architectural conservation company in St. Louis.
Howard Courtney, an environmental sanitarian with the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, will present "The Dangers of Lead-Based Paint." Among the information to be presented will be tips on how to minimize danger when working with lead paint.
Question-and-answer sessions will follow each presentation, and participants are encouraged to bring examples of specific problems with their homes or buildings.
The workshops are free and open to the public. For more information, call Brian Driscoll at 339-1367.
