NEW MADRID, Mo. -- A preliminary hearing is set for a man accused of assaulting his 1-month-old son, the Standard Democrat reported. Ricky Garza, 19, of Canalou, Mo., was arraigned Monday in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court on a charge of first-degree assault and bond set at $100,000 cash only. Associate Circuit Judge Charles Spitler set a preliminary hearing for 1 p.m. Aug. 4. Garza was arrested Saturday after medical personnel at an area hospital alerted law enforcement of a possible child abuse incident. Garza remains in custody at the New Madrid County Jail.
