A pregnant woman was taken to a hospital after a fire broke out in an apartment Saturday afternoon.
The Cape Girardeau Fire Department was called to a fire in a two-story apartment building at 333 N. Ellis St. at 12:22 p.m. Firefighters encountered a fire in the front room and bedroom of one of the upstairs units, according to a report filed by battalion chief Mark Starnes.
Firefighters evacuated the building, and they brought the blaze under control in about five minutes. Starnes reported although the affected apartment sustained $15,000 in damage, the other seven apartments still were inhabitable after the fire.
Starnes noted there were no working smoke detectors in the fire-damaged apartment.
Starnes said a pregnant woman suffering from smoke inhalation was taken by Cape County Private Ambulance to a hospital as a precaution.
