JACKSON -- Union Planters bank at 101 W. Main in Jackson was closed Tuesday.

"But, we hope to be open again Wednesday afternoon," said Brenda Proffer, branch manager.

The bank has been without power since Sunday, when "something happened to the circuit breaker," said Proffer.

Electricians worked on the breaker Sunday evening, and again Tuesday morning.

Bank officials were not sure what happened to the breaker -- whether water got into it or it was struck by lightning from weekend storms.

The Main Street bank, one of three Union Planters branches in the Jackson area, was open Saturday prior to Memorial Day.

An employee entered the bank Sunday to do some work. She reported that the lights flickered a couple of times, then went out, said Proffer.

Electrician were called, and remained on the scene until about 11 p.m. Sunday.

No major damage was reported, said Proffer.

"We are waiting for the new breaker to be installed, hopefully Wednesday."

Union Planters, headquartered at Memphis, Tenn., acquired six locations in Cape Girardeau when it purchased the former Cape County Bank in a transaction that was completed on Jan. 2, 1996.

Three of the branches were located at Jackson. The main location in the county is at 407 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, which also has two additional sites.

Union Planters Corp., a $15 billion Memphis-based bank holding company, also recently announced an agreement to acquire Magna Bancorp Inc.
