The computer server at the Cape Girardeau post office was up and running again Thursday.

Wednesday the office experienced a possible "power-spike" that damaged some internal hardware. Technical personnel came from out of town that evening and replaced the hardware and fixed the problem without losing any data, said post office officials.

In the early hours of the computer malfunction, workers were unable to weigh mail. That problem was fixed by noon, but throughout the day the post office could not run credit cards or process money orders.

Dan Strauss, manager of customer service for the post office, said the last day to send packages nationwide for guaranteed Christmas delivery is Dec. 18.

Mailing inside Cape Girardeau is guaranteed overnight.

Express packages can be mailed nationwide as late as Dec. 24. Cape Girardeau will have extra people on staff the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas and will have a worker delivering express packages on Christmas.
