KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two men who were fishing in a Jackson County park found what appeared to be a human skull, authorities said Sunday.
Deputy Ronda Montgomery, of the Jackson County sheriff's department, said the skull was found about 3 p.m. Sunday in the Little Blue River and appeared to be that of a small adult or child.
Two men said they were fishing along the banks of the river when one noticed something floating in the water. One of the men picked it up, put it on the banks of the river and called authorities.
Montgomery said the Independence police crime lab and the Lee's Summit underwater recovery team were called in to assist in the search for additional evidence.
The skull was too decomposed to determine the race or gender and would be taken to the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office for examination, Montgomery said.
