POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Business owners, Poplar Bluff Fire Department officials and insurance agents continued to assess damages to the Dairy Queen on Monday after an early morning fire resulted in extensive interior smoke damage.

Those on scene were unavailable for comment, but fire department Capt. Roy Lane was on duty when the department received the call at 1:32 a.m. A heat sensor in the kitchen alerted the department. Three trucks responded.

When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming out of the building but no fire was visible, according to Lane. The scene was cleared at 4:08 a.m.

"It's going to be down for a few months at least," Lane said.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but the state fire marshal is investigating.
