JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- At 12 days out from the Nov. 7 election, Democrat Tom Neumeyer had $5,300 more in his campaign account than Republican Jason Crowell. However, over the course of the race Crowell had raised more than twice as much money as his opponent while outspending him by better than 3-to-1.
Campaign finance figures for the 158th District state representative race come from disclosure reports filed Monday with the Missouri Ethics Commission.
For the entire general election, Crowell had raised $23,145 while spending $18,021.54. Neumeyer had collected $8,215 while spending $5,883.34.
During the latest reporting period, which covered Oct. 1 through Oct. 26, Crowell raised about one-third of his money -- $7,105 -- while doing nearly all of his spending -- $16,592.91. He had $6,430.75 in cash-on-hand.
All of Crowell's money came from 43 itemized donations. Donations from outside of the 158th District, which represents most of Cape Girardeau, accounted for at least 16 of those donations and approximately 43 percent of his total receipts, or $3,075.
Sixteen contributors gave the maximum for a state House of Representatives race of $275. Half of those were from donors based outside the district, primarily political action committees.
Almost all of Crowell's expenses this period were for media buys.
Neumeyer during this period raised $3,388 -- less than a third than his total for the election -- and spent $3,243.53, better than half of his overall expenditures.
Of his receipts, $2,300 came from 16 itemized donations. The remaining $1,088 came from unnamed donors giving small amounts.
About 72 percent of his itemized funds came from 12 donors outside of the district. All but one $100 donation came from labor unions. Ten different Laborers Union locals or regional chapters from around Missouri contributed $1,225 to Neumeyer.
Three donors gave Neumeyer the legal limit.
Neumeyer expenditures were largely for general campaign expenses, including nearly $1,000 for newspaper advertising.
