A Tamms, Illinois, man was pulled over in Cape Girardeau because the license plate on his truck belonged to the owner of a compact car.

After the stop, officers said they found a variety of illegal items in the man’s vehicle.

Brandon Tyrel Jeffers, 30, was arrested early Friday and charged with possession of a controlled substance, forgery, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of an imitation controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jeffers sprayed copious amounts of cologne in his vehicle, but Cape Girardeau police officer Timothy Miller detected a marijuana odor on Jeffers, according to Miller’s probable-cause statement.

Jeffers consented to a search and was placed in handcuffs, Miller wrote. A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper watched Jeffers as Miller searched the vehicle.

The trooper pointed out two bags of marijuana, containing 10 grams total, that fell to the ground, according to the statement. Jeffers tried to hide the bags between his legs, then tried to drop them, Miller wrote. The trooper also found a small, one-gram bag that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the statement.

Miller found a metal safe containing a plastic bag with a white powder, but the substance did not test positive for any drug, according to the statement. Officers found a glass pipe and metal pipe in compartments of the vehicle, Miller wrote.

At the police station, officers inspected the money Jeffers had and discovered three $20 bills were counterfeit. Jeffers also said the white powder in the safe was baking soda.
