Police say the person they charged with Monday's attempted robbery of a Cape Girardeau bank is the same person they arrested earlier this month in an alleged attempted theft from an ATM.
The Cape Girardeau Police Department took David Carl Dawson into custody following Monday's attempted robbery of First Missouri State Bank at 2 S. Mount Auburn Road. He also was charged Monday with felony property damage for his alleged role in damaging a US Bank ATM, located at 3060 William St., on Nov. 21.
A bond has been set at $20,000 for the property damage charge.
An arrest warrant was issued Monday for Dawson, 50, 1427 N. West End Blvd., on a charge of first-degree attempted robbery, according to a news release issued by the Cape Girardeau Police Department. Dawson is being held on a $75,000 bond on the robbery charge and is being held in the Cape Girardeau County Jail.
On the property damage charge, police released photographs of the suspect, who they said caused extensive damage during an unsuccessful attempt to open the automated teller machine. About 10 a.m. Dec. 2, acting on a tip from someone who called to identify the man, officers arrested him, according to a previous Southeast Missourian article.
The suspect was released pending filing of formal charges, police said at the time. His initial appearance is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 23 before associate circuit judge Gary Kamp.
