Officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department and Cape Girardeau Police Department searched a Cape Girardeau apartment for a wanted man Tuesday morning.

David Rains, 35, is wanted on failure to appear for charges of burglary, stealing and property damage.

Bond was posted for Rains at $75,000, but because he missed his initial arraigment Tuesday morning at the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse, Judge Scott Thomsen ordered his bond be forfeited and issued a warrant for failure to appear for $75,000 cash only.

Later that afternoon, Rains skipped a bench trial for violating a child-protection order, and Thomsen issued an additional $2,500 warrant for Rains' arrest.

Rains' last known address was 1652 N. Main St.

Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Capt. David James said officers received a tip Rains was seen at an apartment building on 115 N. Ellis St. and conducted a search for him Tuesday morning.

Cape Girardeau police and Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers assisted the sheriff's office because Rains is considered dangerous and is known to use drugs.

Landlord Sandy Schmidt waited outside the apartment as officers searched the building and said she believed police had probable cause to search for Rains in the apartment complex. Schmidt specified, however, the wanted man was not a tenant.

Police arrested Rains on May 29 after serving a search warrant at 1652 N. Main St. in connection with a burglary at a Cape Girardeau County home earlier that month. James said jewelry and a car were stolen from the home, and the vehicle was found on fire later that day.

Four people were detained during that search warrant, and in addition to Rains, two of the three were charged with various burglary and theft charges. Rains' bond was set at $20,000 cash or surety, which he paid the next day. He was released.

Before Rains' charges on May 29, Rains also was charged with burglary, theft and stealing and property damage. He is scheduled for a case review July 6 in connection with those charges.

In August 2012, Rains plead guilty to driving while intoxicated and was issued a suspended sentence for two years of supervision from a private correctional service. He completed that probation in August 2014.

In October 2014, Rains was charged with domestic assault and issued another two-year suspended sentence and 60 days in the county jail, according to online records.

James said has been known to resist law enforcement and asked the public call the sheriff's office at 243-3551 if they come in contact with him.
