Cape Girardeau police are looking for whoever was responsible for a residential burglary Monday night on Montgomery Street.

A woman called police about 10:30 p.m. Monday to report she had just returned to her home in the 1700 block of Montgomery Street and was unlocking her front door when she heard two gunshots from inside, said Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

"Inside the house, there was definite signs of somebody being inside there," he said.

Someone had gone through the house and taken a handgun and an undisclosed amount of cash, Hickey said.

The victim told police she had moved to the home just a few days earlier, Hickey said.

Police did not have any suspects Tuesday evening, he said, but the case remained under investigation.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call the Cape Girardeau Police Department at 335-6621.
