The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department spent several hours Thursday morning working with area police on a search for a suspect believed armed and dangerous.
The manhunt took place in the area of Parkwood Lake Estates and Route K, near Notre Dame Regional High School.
The suspect is believed to have been involved in a home-invasion robbery that happened previously in Jackson, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. One suspect in the robbery already had been taken into custody, the release stated.
A robbery was reported Wednesday in the 2000 block of Old Toll Road, according to a Thursday afternoon report from the Jackson Police Department.
The manhunt prompted Notre Dame, which is completing final exams this week, to lock down the school briefly.
Brother David Migliorino, principal, said law enforcement in the area had given the OK for students to leave the school about 10 a.m. The school allowed them to contact their families and leave for the day, pending exam schedules.
Throughout the morning's lockdown, he said police worked well with the school, and students and faculty were well.
"We're very safe," Migliorino said. "There's (Missouri State) Highway Patrol everywhere.
"The Cape police have been wonderful. The county has been great. We're doing fine."
Sheriff's deputies are searching for a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, the news release stated. The suspect is believed to have shoulder-length dreadlocks and dark or black clothing and possibly is armed with a handgun.
Residents are advised to be on the lookout and report any suspicious person in the area to the sheriff's office by calling 243-3551 or 911.
