Scott City homeowner fatally shoots intruder during attempted burglary. Police confirm Jason Vermillion died after breaking into the residence. No charges for the homeowner, who acted in self-defense.

A Scott City man is dead after police say he tried to burglarize a home and the homeowner shot him.

A social media post from Scott City Police Department says Jason Vermillion died after being shot with a handgun.

The release says the homeowner called 911 and reported someone had kicked in his back door and that he had shot the man.

When police arrived, the homeowner took them to the man, who was still alive. He died a short time later at a local hospital.

Police chief Christopher Griggs said the homeowner is not facing charges at this time.

"The homeowner was acting in self defense and was protecting himself and his property," the chief says in the post.
