Although Cape Girardeau police canvassed a neighborhood Saturday after an Illinois man was pistol-whipped, causing serious head injuries, the search was unsuccessful.

According to Sgt. Jason Selzer, spokesman with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, police were still investigating the incident Monday and no one was in custody.

Police officers responded to the 600 block of Sycamore Circle just before 6 p.m. Saturday after a 911 call came in that a man had been shot in the head. Selzer said the woman who made the 911 call, also believed to be the victim's girlfriend, called police about 15 minutes after the alleged shooting.

Selzer said the woman claimed not to see the incident, but entered a room in the residence to find her boyfriend bleeding from the head. The victim also told police he thought he was shot in the head and was conscious when officers arrived on scene.

"He said 'I think so,' but I guess it was possible the pop he heard could been the gun hitting his head," Selzer said.

Police said the suspect and the victim knew each other.

Selzer wouldn't release the victim's name Monday and also wouldn't release details of an interview that took place Saturday between the victim and police.
