Cape Girardeau police responded Friday to an incident at a local bank where a man allegedly threatened to rob the bank after an employee could not cash his check.

Police spokesman Darin Hickey said a 55-year-old local man was arrested after he entered the US Bank lobby at 325 N. Kingshighway around 1 p.m. Friday and became angry with a cashier. She had informed him she could not cash a check for him because he was not an account holder and did not have the identification the bank requires.

"He then said, 'I've always wanted to rob this place,' and then placed his hands in his pockets," Hickey said.

The man then walked out of the bank and employees called police to report the incident. The man re-entered the bank lobby a short time later and police, who were already inside, arrested him, Hickey said.

He was later released from police custody and a report was sent to the Cape Girardeau County prosecuting attorney's office for review. A summons could be mailed or a warrant could be issued for his arrest, Hickey said. Police did not release the man's name because he has not been charged with a crime.

No word on possible charges was available from the prosecuting attorney's office Monday, which was closed for a holiday.
