Police are investigating an early morning burglary at a Cape Girardeau home that ended with the homeowner shooting near the suspect.

According to Sgt. Dennis Horn of the Cape Girardeau Police Department, the homeowner on South Benton Street was sleeping when he heard glass from his window breaking around 1 a.m. After he got out of bed to investigate the situation, he saw a man standing in the hallway.

Horn said the homeowner then fired a shot near the suspect, who fled by foot.

Horn said the homeowner was not injured, though he did not know the condition of the suspect.
