Cape Girardeau police officers investigated the shooting of a man Sunday night in the parking lot of a Hardee's restaurant at 2115 William St.

Officers found the man shot in the leg about 10:30 p.m. and shell casings near a Rhodes 101 convenience store at 2109 William St., according police scanner reports. A bullet also later may have been found in door glass at a nearby dance studio.

A Southeast Missourian photographer at the scene said the victim was walking with assistance before he was placed on a stretcher.

Cape Girardeau firefighters and EMTs treated the man at the scene, who was taken away by ambulance minutes later.

The shooting occurred after the restaurant's closing time of 10 p.m.

Two witnesses at the Rhodes said they heard between six and 10 shots fired. One witness was inside the convenience store when the shooting occurred. She said a white man in his late 20s or 30s was standing next to a silver BMW parked near a wall of the store when he started firing a semi-automatic pistol with his left hand. She said he seemed to train his firearm at a victim running toward the Hardee's.

"He probably unloaded the whole barrel," she said.

A second witness at the Rhodes said she was just getting out of her car during the shooting. She said she saw a black man, about 19 or 20 years old, wearing a blue hoodie run across the front door of the convenience store before hopping into the BMW with the shooter and driving away.

"I was ducking for my life," she said.

Police placed several orange evidence cones around broken glass and shell casings near the west wall of the convenience store. Police officers on scene declined to comment on the status of the victim or give information. Public information officer Adam Glueck could not be reached for comment.
