The Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad was activated Thursday night to investigate a fatal shooting in the 600 block of Locust Street.

Just before 9:20 p.m. Thursday, police scanner traffic indicated a witness reported hearing shots and seeing someone on the ground.

Sgt. Adam Glueck of the Cape Girardeau Police Department said the victim, who was found on a porch at 612 Locust St., was deceased when officers arrived.

A neighbor told a Southeast Missourian reporter the victim had been shot in the face at close range.

The victim’s roommate, who declined to give her name, told the reporter the victim, who was 27, originally was from Memphis, Tennessee, but had moved to Cape Girardeau in February and was visiting a cousin at the house on Locust Street where the shooting occurred.

She said the victim was holding his 1-year-old baby at the time he was shot.

A Southeast Missourian photographer reported seeing a distraught woman run through the police tape at the scene, screaming, “My boyfriend’s dead!”

The photographer said neighbors reported hearing a “pop” just before the victim was found.

At press time, police were canvassing the area.

Scanner traffic just after 10:32 p.m. indicated officers were looking for a possible suspect vehicle that had been seen in the area.
