SIKESTON, Mo. -- A suspected arsonist was arrested after he allegedly attacked police at a fire in Sikeston.
Around 7 a.m. Monday, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to a call regarding a structure fire at 223 Petroleum St. As the police and fire divisions arrived on the scene, they found a home fully involved with fire.
Firefighters began battling the blaze, and a police officer contacted the 57-year-old homeowner. During the conversation, the owner became belligerent and attempted to assault the officer, according to Sgt. Jim McMillen, public information officer for the department. Following a brief struggle, the man was subdued and arrested for the assault.
Fire investigators extinguished the blaze and conducted a cause and origin investigation.
The man remained in custody Tuesday pending possible charges relating to the fire and the assault on the officer.
