The Jackson Police Department believes it could have the first solid lead in the jewelry burglaries that have puzzled law enforcement for months, chief James Humphreys said Tuesday.

The department released a composite sketch, prepared in cooperation with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, of a man seen April 10 fleeing a home in east Jackson. The resident surprised the burglar, who got away with jewelry and other items by fleeing in a small red car.

"We are pretty confident it fits the pattern of the other ones," Humphreys said. "From my understanding, this is the first one where we have gotten some pretty decent evidence."

Since last fall, Cape Girardeau police and Jackson police have been investigating a string of burglaries with a similar pattern. The break-ins appear to be well-planned, occurring soon after victims have left their homes, with a rock or other object used to break through a window or door to gain entry. The thieves concentrate on jewelry and sometimes steal cash as well but leave behind other, bulkier items of value.

Cape Girardeau police have recorded more than 50 burglaries that fit the pattern, spokesman Sgt. Jason Selzer said. "We definitely are working with Jackson, but we are not coming out and saying this is our guy. They are not coming out and saying this is their guy, but we are definitely we are working with Jackson to see if this is the person."

The most recent burglary in Cape Girardeau that fits the pattern took place March 30 on Price Drive, Selzer said.

Jackson has received between 10 and 15 reports of burglaries that appear to be connected with the jewelry thefts, Humphreys said. Most have been reported on the east side of the city, he said.

Both departments are urging residents to be watchful and keep an eye on the homes of neighbors when they are away. And anyone who recognizes the person in the composite sketch or has knowledge of the small red car used to get away is being asked to call the Jackson Police Department at 243-3151 or the Cape Girardeau Police Department at 335-6621.
