A police chase and search that lasted several hours Monday night in Jackson finally came to an end early Tuesday morning, as 31-year-old Joseph Kelley of Cape Girardeau was apprehended by the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department.

Jackson Police Capt. Robert Bonney said the sheriff's department finally found Kelley at around 1 a.m. at a relative's home while following up on the case.

The arrest was the culmination of a chase that started around 8 p.m. Monday, when Jackson police found a car stalled on a low-water bridge on Mary Street. Bonney said a police officer found Kelley and 31-year-old Angela Sides of Oak Ridge inside the car. Sides was intoxicated, and upon searching the vehicle the officer found a syringe used for drug use.

The officer was able to arrest Sides after a brief struggle, but Kelley fled into Hubble Creek with a handcuff strapped to one wrist after interference by Sides, said Bonney. Officers followed Kelley to a bridge on Adams Street but lost sight of him.

A search of the bridge continued until around 11 p.m., when it was called off. Police now believe that Kelley may have hidden in the high weeds and brush surrounding the bridge.

Both suspects remained in Cape Girardeau County Jail Tuesday night. Kelley was charged with resisting arrest by fleeing and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. His bond was set at $7,500 cash or assurity, with another $5,000 cash or assurity bond for probation violation.

Sides was charged with driving while intoxicated and interfering with an arrest by threatening to use violence or physical force, both misdemeanors. Her bond was also set at $7,500 cash or assurity.
