Fair and pleasant weather with low humidities and high temperatures in the low to mid-80s is forecast for the Labor Day holiday weekend.
The last major holiday weekend of the summer season begins at 6 p.m. today and ends at midnight Monday.
All federal, state, county and municipal offices, as well as banks and other financial institutions will be closed on Monday.
Jackson, Scott City, and Chaffee will hold their regular Monday night board of aldermen meetings on Tuesday due to the holiday.
The Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Chaffee license fee offices will be closed Saturday and Monday, and will reopen on Tuesday.
There will be no drivers or commercial drivers license exams given Monday at the Jackson National Guard Armory. Tests will be given Thursday and Friday at the Cape Girardeau Naval Reserve Center. Testing at Jackson will resume Sept. 13.
All area post offices will be closed Monday. There will be no carrier or rural-route deliveries, although express and special delivery mail will be handled on Monday.
There will be no window or post office box service, or collection of mail from city drop boxes on Monday. The next collection of mail from drop boxes will at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
There will be no trash pickups in Cape Girardeau, Jackson or Scott City on Monday. Chaffee will make its regular Monday pickup. Residents should have their trash containers at curbside Monday morning.
Cape Girardeau's Monday trash pickup route will run Tuesday, and Tuesday's route will run Wednesday. There will be no Wednesday special pickups next week. The regular schedule will resume next Thursday.
Jackson will consolidate Monday's trash route with Tuesday's route.
Scott City will run Monday's trash pickup route on Tuesday, and the Tuesday route on Wednesday.
All area schools, including Southeast Missouri State University classes and all offices, will be closed Monday.
The Missouri Highway Patrol and Illinois State Police will have all available officers on patrol during the holiday period as part of Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort). They'll be looking for travelers who need assistance, as well as drunk drivers, speeders, and those driving carelessly.
Last year, 10 people were killed and more than 600 injured in accidents on Missouri roads and highways over the Labor Day holiday.
In addition to family activities, a number of other public events will take place this weekend, including Benton Neighbor Days tonight and Saturday at Benton, and the Du Quoin State Fair at Du Quoin, Ill. On Saturday, the World Trotting Derby will be run at the fair.
On Monday at 6 p.m., the Compton Heights Concert Band of St. Louis will perform a free Labor Day band concert as part of the Cape Girardeau Bicentennial celebration. The concert will be held at the band shell in Capaha Park.
The 33rd annual Advance Labor Day Picnic will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Events will include a car show on Saturday morning and Miss Labor Day Pageant at 7:30 p.m. A kid tractor pull will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, followed by a horseshoe tournament and many other activities.
