PLATTE CITY, Mo. -- A Platte County man was found dead inside his home Saturday night following an exchange of gunfire with deputies, the sheriff's office said.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the man committed suicide or was hit during the exchange of shots.

Sheriff's deputies were sent to the home shortly before 6 p.m. after receiving a report of a disturbance. The sheriff's office said that after the deputies knocked on the door, the man began shooting at them. It said he went back into the house when the deputies returned fire.

The deputies were not injured.
