Snyder told authorities he believes the trouble was due to a mechanical malfunction. He told the Perry County Sheriff's Department the plane's engine went into idle after the throttle cable snapped.

The plane will be transported to Perryville Municipal Airport to be repaired, according to Larry Causey, a flight instructor at the airport.

The plane took off from Cape Girardeau Regional Airport shortly after 11 a.m. and was destined for St. Claire, said Perry County Sheriff Gary Schaaf.
