BEL-NOR, Mo. -- A suburban St. Louis man was hospitalized Monday after being attacked by two pit bulls.

It happened Monday morning near Bel-Nor in north St. Louis County. The man underwent surgery and had several bites the arms and legs, St. Louis County police spokeswoman Tracy Panus said. His name was not released.

"It's not life-threatening, but he was injured pretty badly," Panus said.

The man who was attacked is a relative of the homeowner. He had just arrived to do some work on the home, Panus said.

"He was just playing with the dogs," she said. "One of them bit him and the other followed suit."

A neighbor saw the attack and shot the dogs. One dog died. The other was euthanized later Monday.

Police don't know what prompted the attack.

"He had played with the dogs previously and never had a problem with them," Panus said.
