Photographers from 29 states will showcase their work in Gallery 100's Photo 94 National Juried Exhibition.

The photographic competition is sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts and will be held in Gallery's 100's new location at 1707 Mt. Auburn Road in Cape.

The Photo 94 exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, May 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be open to the public through May 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. during the week.

Photo 94 received 210 entries. From that 51 photographs were chosen by juror Richard Lawson. The exhibit includes works by 38 artist/photographers, and demonstrates the best examples of artistic range by photographers.

Among entries chosen was a Scandinavian wharf-side village, eerie winter scenes, graceful floral compositions, historical pictures, multiple-exposure images, abstract works and character studies of human nature.

"Different films, chemical processing, printing methods and finishing techniques allow photographers more creative expression," said Laura Brothers, an administrative assistant at the SEMO Council on the Arts.

"Using different technical methods enhances the mood of the photograph and expresses what the artist/photographer considers significant about the image," said Brothers. "In addition to selecting the image, technical processes make fine photography very much a fine art."

Photo 94 is one of four juried compositions held at Gallery 100 each year.
