The principal of Perryville High School has been on administrative leave since Thursday, but why remains unclear.
In a statement, the school district cited personnel matters in its refusal to elaborate, saying only that Rich Thomas would be replaced for an indefinite period by athletic director and assistant principal Jeff Steffens.
A statement issued by the school did not say whether Thomas would be paid during his leave.
Garrett Cook continues in his position as assistant principal at the school.
Kate Martin, the communications director for the district, said she could not give more information and referred a reporter to the prepared statement. She also declined to give a reporter access to Steffens on what he hopes to accomplish in his new, if possibly temporary, role.
In a letter to parents, superintendent Andrew Comstock cited personnel issues as well, adding: "What I can tell you is that our students are safe, they are learning, and have gotten this school year off to a great start."
Comstock expressed his belief in Steffens, who has worked for the district for 26 years.
"I have every confidence in Mr. Steffens' ability to guide PHS through a successful school year," Comstock wrote. "However, he and Mr. Cook are going to need our help as administrators, staff, parents and students."
Comstock asked for patience as the two men take on duties that usually would be spread among three people.
"I met with staff this morning, and they have rallied around Mr. Steffens," Comstock wrote. "Parents and students can help by answering any calls to volunteer, and by offering encouragement and support as we move forward."
