PARK HILLS -- Perryville's Pirates followed their girls basketball team into the district finals with a solid defensive effort against the Arcadia Valley Tigers Thursday.

Scott Kassel poured in 23 points to lead the Pirates (26-2) into the championship game against top-seeded North County. On Wednesday, the Lady Pirates advanced to the finals where they will meet top-seeded Fredericktown. Both Perryville teams are seeded second in the tourney.

"We had the tempo of the game going our way and we took advantage of our size," Pirates coach Rick Francis said. "We didn't shoot our free throws very well but our defense did a good job in the second half."

Bruce Weinkein scored 12 points and added 12 rebounds to help Kassel inside. Perryville shot over 50 percent in both halves, building a 28-20 lead at halftime and never allowing the Tigers to gain ground.

Although Perryville will be facing a North County team that handed the Pirates one of only two losses on the year, Francis said his squad is ready for the championship matchup.

"This will be the first time our seniors will have a chance to play in a district championship game," Francis said. "We're looking forward to it and we're hoping a big crowd of supporters will be there for both Perryville teams."

The boys final will follow the girls title game starting at 6 p.m.
