PERRYVILLE -- Perry County voters approved a $4.059 million bond issue for a new nursing home Tuesday. The funding, approved 1,889 to 1,156, will be used for construction and furnishing of a 123-bed nursing home in Perryville, with revenues from the nursing home paying off the bonds...

PERRYVILLE -- Perry County voters approved a $4.059 million bond issue for a new nursing home Tuesday.

The funding, approved 1,889 to 1,156, will be used for construction and furnishing of a 123-bed nursing home in Perryville, with revenues from the nursing home paying off the bonds.

The facility will replace Perry County Nursing Home, and be built adjacent to it alongside Highway 61 South.

A total of 3,350 votes -- more than 40 percent of registered voters -- turned out in Perry County.

Thomas F. Schaaf, one of four Democratic candidates in a race for 155th District state representative, led Perry County balloting among four Democrats, with 183 votes. Other Democrats and their votes: Mel Thurman, 106; Ray Krahn, 45; and Franklin ("Dutch) Schmidt, 120.

Republican Patrick A. Naeger led all balloting for the day, receiving 2,208 votes in the primary race for state representative. Other Republicans were Elbert ("Al") Bohnert, 505, and James D. Williams, 148.

Republican Dennis E. Lohmann will be new Eastern District commissioner in Perry County. He polled 445 votes to emerge the Republican winner in the Tuesday primary, defeating incumbent Olive G. Bachmann, who received 340 votes; Gregory K. Unger, 187; and Melvin A. Moldenhauer, 391. No Democrats filed.

Incumbent Republican Michael Yamnitz will face Democrat Donald A. Welker in the November general election for Western District commissioner. Yamnitz collected 672 votes to defeat four other candidates on the Republican primary ticket. Other GOP candidates and vote totals: Terry L. Miederhoff, 237; Dale Hoff, 145; and Nelson E. Kirn and Carl R. ("Corky") Leuckel, 274. Welker, unopposed on the Democratic ticket, polled 238 votes.

Jay Thompson led the race for the Democratic nomination in the 8th District congressional race, with 155 votes. Other candidates and their totals: Thad Bullock, 125; Don Hager, 96; and Gene Curtis, 42.

Balloting was close in the Amendment 4 bond issue, with 1,488 against and 1,473 for.
