Perry County taxidermist accused of stealing from clients

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- A Perry County taxidermist was charged with felony stealing Wednesday for allegedly taking customers' money and not filling their taxidermy orders.

Eric E. Smith, 29, of Perryville, was charged with felony stealing and stealing by deceit, according to the Perry County Sheriff's Department. Perry County Sheriff Gary J. Schaaf said the sheriff's office began receiving complaints on Nov. 1, and the investigation led to 19 victims. Smith was doing business as Preserving Memories Taxidermy. Authorities said he took orders and deposits for mounting deer heads, but did not fill the orders or return the animal parts or deposits. A search warrant executed Wednesday at Smith's residence and shop in Perry County led to recovery of some of the items, Schaaf said. Smith was arrested and was being held Friday at the Perry County Jail. His bond was set at $5,000 cash-only. Smith is represented by Patrick McMenamin. A message was left Friday at McMenamin's office.
