PERRYVILLE -- With a new 911 numbering system, some Perry County residents might get a new address without even moving.

As county officials have researched and listed road names found on computerized maps, they have found a need to rename some roads.

"The road naming research has indicated that in only a few cases will names replace the existing county road numbering system," said Dan Bowman, chief deputy and 911 official for the county.

Numbered addresses, much like those found in a city, are needed to help emergency personnel locate homes in rural areas.

A post office box or a rural route and box number do not necessarily tell emergency dispatchers and personnel where an emergency is, Bowman said.

"The new addressing could save crucial seconds, if not minutes, in responding to emergencies," he said.
