Two local students earn spots on dean's lists

Joseph Shane Walter, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Walter of Jackson, was recently named to the dean's list for the spring 2002 semester at Washington University in St. Louis, in the John M. Olin School of Business.

Walter is a graduate of Jackson High School. To make the dean's list, students must earn a semester GPA of 3.6 and be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours.

Erik Marshall Kabo of Cape Girardeau was named to the summer semester 2002 dean's list at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Undergraduates earning 3.0 or higher during a semester are eligible for the dean's list.

Cape Girardeau man gets scholarship to Southeast

Cari L. Watkins of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a general education degree scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for 2002-2003.

The GED scholarship is awarded to Southeast students who have completed their GED program and achieved a combined standard score of 300 or above.

The scholarship covers incidental fees for enrollment in up to 32 credit hours per academic year for up to four years. Watkins is the daughter of Ron and Susan Watkins of Sikeston, Mo.

Area students accepted at Ranken College

Four local residents have been accepted into Ranken Technical College in St. Louis and started at the college in August.

Chris Oberbeck of Jackson, Matthew L. Baer and Daniel Petot, both of Perryville, Mo., have enrolled in the college's precision machining technology program.

Gregory Gibbar, also of Perryville, has enrolled in the college's industrial technology program.

Jones named high school principal of the year

Cape Girardeau County native Darlene Jones was recently named high school principal of the year by the St. Louis Association of Secondary School Principals.

Jones has been principal of Francis Howell North High School in St. Louis since 1996 and was picked from nominees throughout St. Louis city and St. Louis and St. Charles counties.

She is a graduate of Jackson High School and the daughter of Marlen and Lorene Oehl of Oak Ridge.

Burger King awards scholarship to employee

Drury Restaurants, a Burger King Corporation franchisee, recently awarded a scholarship to Ryan Jenkins of Cape Girardeau.

The scholarships provide working students, some of who are struggling financially to stay in school, with funds to attend the university of their choice.

The primary requirements are the student is working and has a minimum 2.2 grade point average.

Jenkins has worked at the Cape Girardeau-Broadway location for more than four years. He is currently studying accounting at Southeast Missouri State University.

MHA scholarships awarded to area women

The Missouri Hospital Association has awarded MHA Health Professions Scholarships to Jennifer Lynn Brotherton of Perryville, Mo., Amber Elise Donelson of Scott City, and Kelley J. Matlock of McClure, Ill.

MHA established the $1 million scholarship program this year to provide funding for students pursuing careers in nursing and the allied health care professions. A total of 91 scholarships were awarded for 2002.

Brotherton is a 2002 graduate of Perryville High School and is currently attending Mineral Area School of Radiologic Technology to become a radiology technician.

Donelson is a 1999 graduate of Scott City High School and is currently attending Maryville University in St. Louis to become a physical therapist.

Matlock if a 1986 graduate of Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake, Ill., and is currently attending Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing to become a registered nurse.

The scholarship program is funded by the MHA Center for Education. Scholarships may total as much as $6,000 per student.
