Pogue named national English award winner

Moretta Pogue, a student at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau, was recently named a United States National Award Winner in English.

Pogue was nominated by Mrs. Welker, her English teacher and she will appear in the US Achievement Academy Official Yearbook.

Pogue is the daughter of Tim and Connie Pogue of Cape Girardeau, and the granddaughter of Rose Martin of Fredericktown, Mo.

Students presented Masonic scholarships

The Masonic Lodges of Alexander, Pulaski and Union counties recently presented $500 scholarships to Celecia Danielle Kizer and Luz Rafael.

Kizer graduated from Cairo, Ill., High School and is the daughter of Carol and Crain Kizer. She plans to attend Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., and major in business administration.

Rafael, a graduate of Cobden, Ill., High School and daughter of Felipe and Maria Rafael of Alto Pass, Ill., plans to attend Southern Illinois University and major in early childhood education.

The lodges sponsoring the scholarships were Anna Lodge No. 520, Cairo Lodge No. 237, Caledonia Lodge No. 47, Boden Lodge No. 466, Dongola Lodge No. 581, Grand Chain Lodge No. 660, Jonesboro Lodge No. 111, Union Lodge No. 627 and Stone Arch Lodge No. 953.

Area school district receives full accreditation

The Meadow Heights School District received full accreditation with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education during the July meeting of the Missouri State Board of Education.

Meadow Heights received only provisional accreditation in 1992 and 1997. The district underwent the third cycle of the Missouri School Improvement Program in April.

Superintendent Duane Schindler said there was a renewed sense of pride in the school now that they've reached level of full accreditation.

Tummins honored for academic distinction

Who's Who Among American High School Students recently announced Kelly L. Tummins of Cape Girardeau has been selected for the second consecutive year for her academic honors during the 2001-2002 school year at Cape Central High School.

Tummins has been in many school and community organizations, including the Cape Girardeau Police Department Explorer's Post No. 4230, Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department lifeguard; PEP Club, Spanish Club, FBLA and FCCLA.

Tummins has served on student council and senate, and been awarded the Principal's Award, student of the month and honor roll. She is active in LaCroix United Methodist Church and is the daughter of Joyce A. Tummins of Cape Girardeau. She is the granddaughter of Geraldine Stroup of Cape Girardeau and the late Thomas B. Stroup.

Show Me Day event scheduled for Sept. 21

Southeast Missouri State University will host "Show Me Day" on Sept. 21 for prospective students and their parents.

The event gets under way at noon in the Show Me Center and provides a chance for prospective students to learn more about the university and its academic programs.

Professors from each department will answer questions. Information also will be available on everything from financial aid to campus housing.

About 4,000 students attended last year's event, said Southeast admissions counselor Christy Mershon.

Students receive gold medal at competition

Molly Williams, a senior at Richland High School in Essex, Mo., and Chad Pender, a senior at Kelly High School in Benton, Mo., recently won the secondary gold medal at the state VICA competition in Kansas City.

Both are students at the Sikeston Career and Technology Center.

They beat out 35 other teams and entitling them to compete in the 38th annual National Leadership Skills Conference.

Williams and Pender won the television/video production contest, making a 60-second public service announcement for the Liberty Memorial Association in Kansas City. They took a written test, completed a story board, shot footage and edited it.

Reno listed in Belmont University graduates

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Matthew A. Reno of Jackson, Mo., recently graduated from Belmont University in Nashville with a bachelor's degree in music business.

Reno is the son of Danny and Desma Reno of Jackson. He is a graduate of Jackson High School.

He is married to the former Dana Wilkinson and currently resides in Nashville.

Reno is employed at Belmont University and plans to pursue a master's degree in music business.

Cape Central graduate presented alumni award

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Marlene Werne, daughter of Pat and Joe Werne of Cape Girardeau, was recently a recipient of the Alumni Award at Denison University in Granville.

Werne is a 2002 graduate of Cape Central High School. The Alumni Award will provide a portion of Werne's tuition and is renewable for four years.

Wanamaker graduates from Ball State University

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Scott Wanamaker, son of Ralph and Anna Wanamaker of Jackson, Mo., graduated from Ball State University during the 2002 spring semester with a master of science degree.

Ball State University is a state-supported university with a current enrollment of about 18,000 graduate and undergraduate students.

Zlokovich named honor society president

Dr. Martha Zlokovich, associate professor of psychology at Southeast Missouri State University, has been elected national president of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology.

She will serve a one-year term as president.

Psi Chi has more than 1,000 chapters at accredited colleges and universities and has registered more than 422,000 lifetime members since the society was founded at Yale University in 1929.

Notre Dame grad named faculty alumni scholar

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State University Alumni Association and faculty recently named Meredith LeGrand as a Faculty Alumni Scholars for 2002-03.

LeGrand, a freshman with an undeclared major, graduated in 2002 from Notre Dame Regional High School in Missouri. She now resides in Augusta.

Students receive a four-year scholarship (based on in-state tuition) and fees.

To be selected for the scholarship, students must be in the top 5 percent of their class. To keep the scholarship, students must attend ASU full-time, maintain a 3.2 semester grade point average, and keep an overall 3.5 GPA.

Dean's list includes Jackson High graduate

Tory D. Meyr was named to the spring 2002 semester dean's list at Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

Meyr is a 2000 graduate of Jackson High School and is the son of Larry and Judi Meyr of Chaffee, Mo.

He is a junior and a starting defensive back for the Washington University football Bears, as well as a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
