Schaefer named recipient of scholarship

Douglas R. Schaefer was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the National Tractor Parts Dealer Association. He is the son of Richard and Ann Schaefer of Wolf Lake, Ill.

The award was presented by Tom Winkleblack, general manager of Schaefer Enterprises. Schaefer plans to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia to pursue a business degree.

The National Tractor Parts Dealer Association is a trade association serving the agricultural and industrial industries with members throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

The NTPDA awards scholarships yearly to members, members' employees and their families based on academic achievement, extra-curricular and community activities, and leadership abilities.

Literacy program begins Sept. 4

The Adult Education and Literacy Program-GED Program will open Sept. 4 in Jackson, Mo.

Classes will be held in the new art room of R.O. Hawkins Junior High School. Classes are free and will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

Entrants sought for scholarship competition

VFW Post 3838 and the Ladies Auxiliary recently announced the 56th annual Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.

Students enrolled in 9th to 12th grade at any public, private, parochial high school or a home study program have the opportunity to win a trip to Washington, D.C. and a $25,000 scholarship.

The theme for this year's audio essay is "Freedom's Obligation" and the deadline for entries is Nov. 1.

The Patriot's Pen essay for students in seventh and eighth grade is also available. The theme is "My Pledge To America." Students have the opportunity to win a national award of a $10,000 U.S. savings bond.

Statewide poem-writing contest announced

The Missouri Center for the Book, a state affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, is sponsoring a contest for Missourians to write a poem on the subject "Why I Read."

The winner and a guest will fly to Washington, D.C., for the second annual National Book Festival on Oct. 12.

The contest is open to Missouri residents, ages 10 and up. To enter, send your poem (one page maximum), name, address and phone number to Missouri Center for the Book, PO Box 287, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0387.

Deadline is Sept. 16. For more information, call 800-325-0131, ext. 8.

Times scheduled for story hour

The Kelly Preschool Story Hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. every other Wednesday in the elementary library for children ages three to five years old.

Graduate from Marble Hill awarded scholarship

Jennifer Meek of Marble Hill, Mo., has been awarded a President's Select Scholarship to attend Williams Baptist College at Walnut Ridge, Ark.

Meek is a 2002 graduate of New Salem Baptist Academy. She is the daughter of Tim and Kaye Meek of Marble Hill.

Cape native named to dean's list

Summer Rahim Chaudhari, a native of Cape Girardeau, was named to the dean's list at University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources for the winter semester 2002 and fall semester 2001.

Chaudhari recently participated in the Undergraduate Research Science Symposium at the University of Missouri.

Kelly FFA represented at state conference

Christine Tew, a member of Kelly FFA, recently attended the Missouri FFA Made for Excellence-Advanced Leadership Development conference in Jefferson City, Mo. During the conference, Tew participated in the advanced leadership development program. The conference explored agricultural careers, leadership and positive role models.
