Giles graduates magna cum laude

Caroline La Croix Giles recently graduated magna cum laude from Southwest Missouri State University with a bachelor of science degree in biology.

Giles is a 1998 graduate of Central High School and is the daughter of Tom and Mary Giles and the granddaughter of the late Jean and Wilda Rudert and Richard and Margaret Giles.

She will attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in the fall.

Student completes study abroad

Rachel Wright, a sophomore entertainment management major at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., recently completed the study-away Spanish language program at Academia Tica in Coronado, Costa Rica.

Wright is a 2001 graduate of Central High School and the daughter of Robert and Judy Wright of Cape Girardeau. She is web director of the Entertainment Management Association and is a recipient of the SMSU Freshman Academic Scholarship. She was also named to the SMSU dean's list for the spring 2002 semester.

Altenburg youth selected for scholars program

Elizabeth Hemman of Altenburg, Mo., was selected to participate in the 18th Joseph Baldwin Academy for Eminent Young Scholars at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.

Hemman is the daughter of Corey and Lisa Hemman and Gay and Jim Ryan. She will be in the eighth grade at Dubray Middle School this fall.

Dunivant graduates from Vanderbilt University

Eric Thomas Dunivant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Dunivant of Jackson, Mo., graduated in May from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., with a bachelors of science degree in engineering. His major was computer science.

Area students named to dean's list

Several area studets recently were named to the dean's list for the 2002 spring semester at their universities. They include:

Rachel Stanley, a political science major at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.

Amanda Starling Gould, daughter of Cathy S. Gould of Jackson, Mo., at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

Keturah Kiehl, daughter of John and Rhonda Kiehl of Pocahontas, Mo., at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. She is a 2000 graduate of Jackson High School.

Margaret Clark of Cape Girardeau, at the Mississippi University for Women.

Joseph Essner, son of Jim and Sharon Essner of Cape Girardeau, at the University of Notre Dame. He is a 1999 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School.

Jason Garner, Jessica Lawrence, Jason Rubel and Lauri Swallow, all of Cape Girardeau, at Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo.

Michael William Sirimaturos of Cape Girardeau, at the University of Mississippi.

Andrew Ostrenga, Brian Tenkhoff and Jennifer Crain were named to the spring 2002 semester chancellor's honor roll at the University of Mississippi.

Southeast student named as collegiate scholar

Frank J. Pace has been named an All-American Collegiate Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. He is a senior at Southeast Missouri State University, and is the son of Sherry Pinero Kee and Richard Kee of Tamms, Ill., and Frank O. Pace of Granite City, Ill. He is the grandson Evelyn Kee of Tamms, Ill.

Student graduates magna cum laude

Gina Fioretti of Cape Girardeau graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in equine studies and business administration from Virginia Intermont College. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Fioretti of Cape Girardeau.

Scholars Program applications available

Applications for the Horatio Alger Missouri Scholars Program, which awards $250,000 in scholarships to high school seniors, are available on line at www.horatioalger.com.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 15.

School district offers diplomas to veterans

The Meridian (Ill.) School District Board of Education will award high school diplomas to WWII veterans who were enrolled in school at the time they enlisted or were drafted into military duty.
