Student presents research project
Rashida Wilson of Cape Girardeau was among students presenting undergraduate research projects recently at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Wilson is the daughter of Richard and Patricia Wilson. She is a 2000 graduate of Central High School and is studying biology.
Her project was on root swelling in plants.
Student earns degree from William Woods
Michael R. Minner of Cape Girardeau will graduate Saturday with a bachelor's degree in art education from William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.
He is the son of Michael and Robin Minner of Cape Girardeau.
Notre Dame students earn honors from governor
Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson presented an award signed by Missouri Gov. Bob Holden to the Notre Dame Regional High School Science Club recently. The club has been picking up trash along a two-mile section of Route K for more than a year.
The students work under the direction of science teacher Jerry Landewe.
Students honored were Candice Hoffman, Brian McCrate, Alicia Seyer, Robin Phelps, Jon Long, Laura Muir, Zach Dillard, Amanda Wozniak, Chelsea Spaeth, Roger Mainor, Andrew Wetter, Levi Horrell, Kenny Richardson and Trey Westrich.
Area student named All-American scholar
John Leible of Scott City has recently been named an All-American scholar by the United States Achievement Academy.
Leible's name will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook. The award is given to students who earn a 3.3 or higher grade-point average and are selected by a school instructor or counselor.
He was nominated for the award by LaDonna Pratt of Scott City High School.
Leible is the son of Rick and Joyce Leible of Scott City. He is the grandson of Bill and Thelma Beckett and Lonnie and Judy Stanley, all of Cape Girardeau.
Students win at VICA conference
Several area students placed among the winners in a Missouri Skills USA-VICA Leadership Conference. All are enrolled at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center.
The students are John Fritzler and Chase Wright, who placed first in TV/video production; Steve Holmes, who placed third in electronics technology; and Ben Walters, who placed third in sheet metal.
The contest was held April 24 through 26 at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo.
Skills USA-VICA is a national organization serving trade, industrial, technical and health occupations students in public high schools, career and technical centers and two-year colleges. There are more than 250,000 student members in the organization.
Class Act students named at Scott City
Scott City Elementary School has named its "class act" students for March. The award is similar to a student of the month recognition.
Students honored in kindergarten through second grade were Callie Patterson, Morgan Baker, Lauren Bullinger, Brooklyn Besinger, Adam Smith, Zoe Handley, Daniel Mansker, Angel Whitworth, Megan McNeely, Lindsey Hosey, Myriah Bernard and Heather Keesee.
Students honored in third through fifth grades were Destiny Whitney, Eddie Cruz, Hope Azinger, Brooke Dohogne, Brittany McClanahan, Marissa Doyle, Harley Robb, Veronica Dietrich, Tori Hosey, Brandon DeProw and Dillon Dougan.
Franklin fourth-grader places in math contest
Owen Hill, a fourth-grade student at Franklin Elementary School, recently won first place in problem solving and second place in concepts in the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics contest in Columbia, Mo.
Based on the competition, Hill is the top-performing fourth-grade math student in the state.
He also won first place in both problem solving and concepts in a regional competition held at Southeast Missouri State University.
Hill is the son of Drs. Hamner and Margaret Hill of Cape Girardeau. He is a student in Judith Gau's fourth-grade class at Franklin.
