Area student named to Arizona dean's list
Sarah Elizabeth Muench was named to the dean's list for the fall 2001 semester at Arizona State University.
She is the daughter of John Muench of Cape Girardeau. She is studying journalism.
Meadow Heights names students of the month
PATTON, Mo. -- The Meadow Heights R-II School District has named its February students of the month. They are Nathan Kocher, Jerrod Howell, Kasey Becker and Tiffany Spaeth from the high school and Mike Mungle, Dustin Welker, Nathan Ellis, Cody Gills, Erika Wilfong, Kyla Mouser, Chelci Gwinn Thurman, Lacey Cook, Samantha Radica and Katrina Steele from the junior high school.
Central students join state reading project
Students and staff at Central High School are joining Missourians in the statewide reading focus for March as they read "Farewell to Manzanar."
As part of the ReadMore Project, Missourians are asked to read and discuss this account of the WWII internment of Japanese Americans.
The Central library has purchased multiple copies of the book, videos that focus on the topic and related materials like propaganda tactics used in the 1940s.
Dr. Al Nicolai will lead the CHS Book Club discussion from 3-4 p.m. March 26 in the library. The public is invited to attend.
Local student earns Governor's Scholarship
Eric W. Lynch of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a Governor's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2002-03 academic year.
Lynch will be a 2002 graduate of Central High School. He is the son of Fred and Robin Lynch of Cape Girardeau.
Two students earn leadership awards
Rebecca A. Randolph and Luke A. Wade have been awarded Missouri Leadership Awards to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2002-03 academic year.
Randolph will be a 2002 graduate of Central High School. She is the daughter of Robert and Barbara Randolph of Cape Girardeau. She plans to study nursing at Southeast.
Wade will be a 2002 graduate of Jackson, Mo., High School. He is the son of Wesley Wade and Debra Wade, both of Jackson.
Booster Club meeting Monday at Kelly school
BENTON, Mo. -- The Kelly schools Booster Club meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Kelly High School band room.
Student earns university scholarship for art work
LeAnne Hengst was awarded a $1,000 Southeast Missouri State University Art Scholarship earlier this month.
She placed first in sculpture and second in fiber during the 24th annual High School Art Symposium. She is a senior at Central High School and the daughter of Richard and LaDonna Hengst of Cape Girardeau.
Five pieces of Hengst's art were chosen to display. More than 116 pieces were on display and 800 works of art entered in the symposium.
Kindergarten screening set at Nell Holcomb
Nell Holcomb School will hold its 2002-03 kindergarten enrollment screening April 4, at Hobb's United Methodist Church. Nell Holcomb R-IV will also be holding a preschool screening for 3- and 4-year-old children the same day. Appointments are necessary.
Children must be 5 by August 1, 2002, to be able to attend kindergarten in the fall. Each child needs a copy of their birth certificate, Social Security card and immunization record to enroll.

Lutheran schools to observe week
National Lutheran Schools Week will be observed Sunday through Saturday, March 9.
Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau is planning a week of activities with a patriotic theme to observe National Lutheran Schools Week, which begins Sunday and ends March 9. Events for the week are:
Sunday: Seventh and eighth grade students church service involvement as per their pastor's request at their home church. Celebration at 3 p.m. at Perryville, Mo., with area Lutheran school students; Monday: Red, white and blue day; Tuesday: Blue and white clothes day; Wednesday: One nation under God day; Thursday: Cap and hat day; Friday: Freedom Friday.

Students graduate with advanced degrees
More than 200 Southern Illinois University students graduated with advanced degrees Dec. 15. Area students receiving degrees were Lisa Kay Scherer, master of science, of Jonesboro and Christoper Vick, master of science, of Tamms.
Warhurst earns top ranking at academy
Cadet Tyler Warhurst, grandson of June Elizabeth Mahy and the late J. Ralph Mahy of Cape Girardeau, recently was awarded the Barracks Bar for ranking in the top 10 in barracks at the Missouri Military Academy Junior School.
Warhurst was listed on the high honor roll for his academic and military grades, was promoted to Corporal Second Class and was awarded the Academic Fourragere for superior scholastic achievement.
Student wins school geography bee
Adeline Yates, a fourth-grader at Franklin Elementary School won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.
The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 14th annual National Geographic Bee.
Yates is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Yates of Cape Girardeau.
Vanderbilt admits local student to class
Erick Deonn Harris, of Cape Girardeau, has been admitted to the freshman class for the 2002-03 academic year at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
Panel discussion on terrorism set Tuesday
A panel discussion on Terrorism and Your Child: How to Give Answers to their Concerns will be held Tuesday at Southeast Missouri Hospital's Harrison Room, starting at 6:30 p.m.
