Author to speak about Mississippi kayak trip

Author Ron Severs will speak at Central High School at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the library.

Orchestra spotlights area string musicians

Central High School recently played host to the Southeast Missouri District Honor Orchestra.

Ed Simon, orchestra director at Parkway South High School was the conductor/clinician for the day's rehearsal and concert. The orchestra featured top high school string musicians in the area.

Those representing Central High School were:

First violin: Eric Miller, Katie Maginel, Patty Cheung, Matt Pyeatte, Sonia Tikoo, Holly Pritchard.

Second violin: Kari Bragg, Wendi Jo Dirden, Bethany Stafford, Karen Brommelsick, Conrad Higgerson, Rachel Story, Sarah Riley-Land, Emily Brennan, Chelsea Barnhart, Brandon Simmons.

Viola: Michael Heise, Sarah Crump, Brad Main, Amanda Girard, Rachel Hendricks, Rosanna Seiler.

Cello: Stephanie Schaffner, Chris Yuen, Beau Jordan, Anne Peel, Jesse Pyeatte, Rob Foeste, Chris Heise.

Bass: Sam Maguire, Josh Downing, Philip Brotherton.

Stoverink awarded Kesler scholarship

Jean Elizabeth Stoverink of Cape Girardeau was recently awarded the David Alan Kesler Memorial Scholarship to Kansas State University for the 2002-2003 school year.

Scott City High School presents awards

The following Scott City High School students were recognized:

Amanda Eades recently received the Prudential Spirit of Community Award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Eades is the daughter of Valerie and Terry Eades of Scott City. She is involved in National Honor Society, student council, band, choir, yearbook and FBLA. She is vice president of her class.

Brandi Compass recently received the Toyota Community Scholars Award from Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc., and Scott City High School.

She is the daughter of Larry and Kim Compass of Scott City and is active in National Honor Society, student council, yearbook, FBLA, track team and volleyball.

Kristin Schaefer was recently named the Elk's Student of the Month for September.

Schaefer is the daughter of Ronald and Patricia Schaefer of Scott City. She is involved in Catholic Youth Council, National Honor Roll, National Scholar, dance squad, basketball, softball and the choir at her church.

Amanda O'Brien recently received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award from the King's Highway Chapter in Sikeston, Mo.

She is the daughter of Patrick and Sally O'Brien and is involved in National Honor Society, student council, FBLA, basketball, softball, volleyball, cheerleading, pep club and is secretary of her class.

Ashley Davis was named the Elk's Student of the Month for November. She is the daughter of Gerald and Marilyn Davis of Scott City and is involved in National Honor Society, band, yearbook, FBLA, science club and choir. She volunteers at a counseling center and received the 2002 Humanities and Social Science Award from the University of Rochester.

Central student named student of the month

Meredith Toole was recently named Exchange Club Student of the Month for November at Central High School.

She is involved in Beta Club, student senate, National Honor Society, Leadership Academy, FBLA, concert and marching band, high school dance team and tennis team.

She is a member of the Lynnwood Baptist Church youth group and the Judgement House mission program there.
