Novak chose ranching over typecasting

LOS ANGELES -- Actress Kim Novak, the blonde bombshell who was a top box office draw in the 1950s, says she stopped acting because she was disillusioned by Hollywood typecasting. She is the subject of a three-day retrospective by American Cinematheque starting Friday. Novak, 70, now lives on an Oregon ranch with her veterinarian husband. She worked with the industry's top directors in the 1950s and '60s, including Alfred Hitchcock ("Vertigo"), Billy Wilder ("Kiss Me, Stupid"), George Sidney ("Pal Joey") and Phil Karlson ("Five Against the House"). Novak is scheduled to attend Saturday's screening of her most popular film, "Vertigo," at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles.

Clay Aiken goes back to school for benefit

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- "American Idol" star Clay Aiken returned to his alma mater, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, to present a $20,000 donation to the school and perform during halftime at a basketball game. Aiken performed "The Way" and "Invisible" at halftime of Charlotte's 81-65 win over East Carolina. The runner-up in the popular "American Idol" television show last year, Aiken graduated from Charlotte in December.

Songwriter included gun with carry-on luggage

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. -- Country music songwriter Hugh Prestwood was arrested after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage at Long Island MacArthur Airport, police said. Prestwood, 61, who lives in Greenport, was on his way to Nashville on Friday when a screener spotted the .38-caliber revolver, Suffolk County police Sgt. Darrell Dabe said. Prestwood was charged with one weapon possession count and two drug possession counts. Prestwood has written hits for country singers including Randy Travis and Crystal Gayle.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison broke his leg in two places in a motorbike accident, his sister said.

Morrison, 42, who appeared as bounty hunter Jango Fett in recent episodes of the Star Wars series, was recovering at home after spending five days in a hospital, Zella Morrison said Saturday.

Temuera Morrison also played Jake Heke in the 1994 New Zealand film "Once Were Warriors."

Doctors inserted two pins in the broken bone, his sister said.

"Fans don't need to worry. He'll be just fine," she said. "It's not going to threaten his career or anything like that."
